Will a high pitched sound deterrent machine work against opossums?

A high pitched sound deterrent machine is one strategy that can be used to get rid of Texas pests and rodents from your home. In fact most companies brand these machines as the solution to all kinds of critters that may find their way into your home. This is unfortunately not always true. These machines do not work on all animals and will not work against opossums either.

Noises, regardless of how high pitched rarely work on animals such as San Antonio opossums. This is because these animals have learned and evolved into being able to live within the human population comfortably. A normal human home always has some noise coming from certain appliances at any given time. These include fridges, radios, television sets and even clocks. If animals were affected by noise, loud music would have driven them away.

The main reason why you should really question the viability of this method of getting rid of San Antonio opossums is the fact that there is no scientific data to prove that they can actually do this. The FTC made stringent rules requiring manufacturers to back up their claims with data from credible research and very few can actually show that this sound deterrent machines work. Moreover, this available data only show that they work on certain insects and rodents, when it comes to opossums, the verdict is still out.

In addition, with constant evolution and adaptation, most animals tend to get used to the sound made by these machines making them less effective over time even on pests that they actually work on.

These high pitched noise deterrents boast of being able to drive out a number of animals while still being inaudible to the human ear. However, there have been reports of people being able to hear a humming or buzzing sound coming from these machines. This only means that they may not be completely safe as advertised by manufacturers as there is again no data to show what the effects of continuously hearing this noise could be.

Moreover, ultrasonic sound machines consume too much power in the form of electricity while producing short range sound that may not even have an impact on the opossums. If anything, these sounds can be blocked by furniture for instance, rendering them powerless.

Before attempting to buy a high pitched sound deterrent machine to drive opossums out of your house or yard, you should know that that would be an exercise in futility at best. This method of driving away opossums does not work even when combined with other methods. The opossum is not affected in anyway by the sound and there is no scientific proof showing otherwise. It would be easier to save your money and spend it on another method that is guaranteed to drive these unbecoming animals from your space effectively.
